Inlays and Onlays
Inlays or onlays are an excellent way to restore teeth that have a moderate to high level of decay or breakage. Less protective than a full coverage crown but substantially stronger than a tooth-coloured composite filling, inlays and onlays can be the best option for many restorative situations.
Similar to an amalgam silver filling, an inlay or an onlay is placed to restore function. An inlay covers only one or two surfaces of the tooth and is used to restore a smaller amount of decay. An onlay actually covers one or more cusps (the chewing surfaces of the tooth) and offers greater protection for moderately fractured or decayed teeth.
Inlays and onlays are incredibly strong due to the fact that they are made from high quality porcelain and are skilfully fabricated by our specialist dental technician. This protects the tooth from fracturing and actually strengthens the tooth. In addition, inlays and onlays fit perfectly into the prepared surface of the tooth helping to keep decay from reoccurring under the restoration.
