The Significance of Biocompatibility When Considering Dental Implants

Biocompatibility: If you are considering dental implants or are researching any type of dental treatment

and come across ‘biocompatibility’ or ‘biocompatible’ you might ask yourself the significance of this word and its importance to any medical profession.

Biocompatible means that the object, metal or substance has the capability to coexist with living tissues and organisms without causing harm. It also means that the living tissue and/or organisms to which it coexists will not reject it.

If the body does not like something it WILL reject it…

The body is very in tune to what comes in and what comes out of it. If it does not like something, it will let you know, for example:

  • Food and drink– you will become very sick and the body will expel the food back out of your system
  • Sickness – any symptoms associated with any sickness are signs that your body is suffering
  • Feminine Hygiene – can result in aches and pains, (TSS)
  • Foreign bodies in the nose or airway – running noses or excess mucus and sneezing
  • Surgery – if the body takes something in of a non-biocompatible nature it will cause complications
  • Parasites and bacteria – if they become a problem can cause the body to react
  • Piercings – can become infected

If the body does not like something inside it will utilise its immune system to reject the foreign object or substance. Your body has several types of immune functions that help protect your body from foreign bodies, to help it fight once they are inside, to expel them from the body and to heal.

At Just Smile we utilise titanium because it is biocompatible…

The dental profession like any medical profession serves a purpose to prevent, fix and improve their patients and the importance of biocompatibility in regards to surgeries and tools is self-explanatory. At Just Smile our dental implants utilise the biocompatibility of titanium, which is used as a structure for a prosthetic tooth.

Titanium is one of the most biocompatible of all metals due to its ability to withstand the body’s immune system, its ability to fuse with bone over time and its strong and flexible nature. It has the ability to resist bodily environments such as:

  • Stress
  • Heat/Cold
  • Fatigue
  • Stretching

It is highly durable, prized for its longevity and is not only used in the dental profession but is widely accepted in a broad spectrum of medical industries and even in the cosmetic piercing industry.

Biocompatible dental implants will ensure success post-surgery…

Each of us possesses a unique biochemistry that determines which substances or materials our body accept into our system. Those who experience allergies are a perfect example of a non-biocompatible nature between the person and the allergy, for example a person allergic to peanuts could die if they ate them but another person might enjoy them as much as they please.

At Just Smile in Ramsgate we understand it is important to supply patients with cosmetic treatments and dento-facial options that have a biocompatible nature to ensure whatever treatment or surgery they choose to undergo is a success. At Just Smile near the Sutherland Shire we fully support the use of biocompatible dentistry and utilise it to its fullest potential in our dental implant treatments that require a titanium screw and a prosthetic tooth to replace missing teeth.

Do You Have More Gaps than Teeth?

Are you hanging on to the last of your remaining teeth? Are you too embarrassed to smile?

One missing tooth can be a discomfort and can cause its own problems but if your mouth is made up of more gaps than teeth, then that can cause damaging effects to your social, digestive, oral and overall health. Humans have not yet mastered the art of regeneration, so once we lose our adult teeth there is no turning back.

Teeth are essential for healthy social life…

A person’s appearance is the first thing you notice: their hair, their face, their weight and as soon as they open their mouth, their teeth. Initially it can affect your opinion of them. You don’t know why but for some reason if they have crooked or missing teeth you will find them less appealing and that is because straight, full and clean teeth are a reflection of success, intelligence and health.

If you have missing teeth, it could be affecting you socially in the following ways:

  • Conversations – it will affect your ability to talk clearly to people
  • First impressions – your smile may make others prejudge you
  • Self-confidence – you may feel embarrassed and lose confidence

Teeth are essential for digestive health…

The most important function of the teeth is to prepare the food for the digestive system. Your digestive system is essential for the intake of nutrient-rich food and water in order to survive, different organs will then break down the food taking from it nutrients and absorbing them into the body. The teeth are the beginning of the whole digestive process and if they are missing it diminishes the variety of food you can eat.

Teeth are essential for facial function…

The problems that your teeth will undergo in the absence in missing teeth is struggling but in the event of long term missing teeth you might find yourself susceptible to the following:

  • Your bite will not have a symmetrical structure and will become distorted and misaligned
  • The jaw bone and gum tissue will deteriorate
  • The face will appear slackened
  • Overall oral health will deplete and may leave it prone to disease
  • The imbalance could spread to your nose, eyes and ears causing related problems

Bridge together the gaps in your teeth and consider dental implants…

Bringing the teeth together and having a fully functional mouth can save you from a variety of problems that can affect your social, digestive and facial health. At Just Smile we suggest dental implants to patients with any number of missing teeth granted they prove to be suitable candidates.

If you have healthy gums, enough jaw bone to allow the implant to attach and have a commitment to great oral hygiene than you are more than likely a viable candidate for dental implants. Those who are heavy smokers, suffering chronic disorders such as diabetes or heart disease and or have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area will need to undergo an evaluation before the surgery.

At Just Smile we utilise advanced technology and innovative treatments…

Advances in technology have allowed patients and dentists to achieve long term results and at Just Smile our founding dentist Dr Rammo’s vision is to provide his patients with modern treatments at his Sydney based dental practice. Just Smile Wants To Know: Ready For Dental Implants?

Are you ready to take the next step to a full and happy mouth full of teeth?

Just Smile wants to know! We want to help you on your way to completeness but first we have to know…Are you a suitable candidate?

Before you take a seat and open your mouth for dental surgery we have a few things to consider. Are you ready for dental implants? This amazing advancement in dental technology is allowing people to regain the freedom of a mouth full of functioning, healthy and permanent teeth.

Our founding dentist Dr Rammo utilises the revolutionary NobleGuideTM dental implant system to place your implant into the exact correct position; it places the implant and the prosthetic in simultaneously providing you with an efficient and comfortable appointment with a recorded swift recovery.

But before we can begin the surgery there are a few things we must discuss.

Are you committed to good dental hygiene?

Everyone is guilty of a little dental neglect now and then so don’t feel ashamed to admit you may not fully fall into this category. The reason we are bringing this question to the forefront is because it is imperative that those who are about to undergo dental implant treatments have already healthy gums, plenty of jaw bone and plaque-free teeth so that the treatment can be as effective and permanent as possible.

Displays of good dental hygiene are:

  • Brushing twice a day
  • Flossing once a day
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Eating soft foods
  • Eating food and drink with calcium
  • Rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash
  • Avoid grinding, clenching or gnawing teeth

In order to perform the surgery, the patient needs to have ample jaw bone because the titanium screw that acts as the supporting structure for the prosthetic tooth will be screwed into the bone. Not to mention, healthy gums are essential so that they do not become susceptible to gum diseases during or after surgery during recovery.

Ticking some boxes? Perfect! A few more questions…

If you engage or suffer from any of the following it is essential that before undergoing any dental implant surgeries to participate in an evaluation with our founding dentist Dr Rammo.

Are you a heavy smoker?

According to a study conducted by the University of Murcia in Spain, those who are heavy smokers that undergo dental implant surgery have a higher risk of infection during surgery and post-surgery, and that the consumption of more than twenty cigarettes a day increases the risk of failure to 30.8%.

Do you suffer from an uncontrollable chronic disorder such as diabetes or heart disease?

People who suffer from diabetes are prone to some form of gum disease which is likely caused by high blood glucose. Those who suffer heart disease or are prone to strokes have increased risk of gingivitis. These gum diseases can have a damaging effect on the surgery and the recovery period and have been known to cause implant failure.

Have you recently had radiation therapy to the head or neck region?

Those who have engaged in radiation therapy for the head or neck can harbour defects that will influence prosthetic treatments. It can affect the ability of the jaw to hold the implant, deteriorate the tissue supporting the dentures and affect the overall success of the surgery.

Don’t be discouraged; at Just Smile we will do whatever we can to help you…

Dental Implants are fantastic but unfortunately cannot be available to everyone and if you are in an unfortunate situation where getting dental implants would not be within your best interests we still offer a range of cosmetic and general treatments that we can utilise to ensure that you leave our practice with a smile on your face.

As Nature Intended; Mouth Symmetry and Dental Implants

Every element in life obeys to some type of symmetry

because it is the most efficient way to make something work or to get something done.
The symmetry of the human body allows each organic mechanism to function in tandem. When this symmetry is affected negatively that is when a person can begin to experience problems in their function, attraction and development.

Symmetry of the teeth…

The teeth serve three purposes worth noting: function, attraction and development. Its function is to chew food, its attraction to look aesthetically pleasing and assist the voice in vocal enticement and further developing and growing in tandem with the body for optimal harmony.

When the body grows, it grows in spurts and in adolescence we experience an influx of oils and hormonal imbalances that affect our overall health but when we blossom into adults our body settles into our own natural symmetry that will allow us to function, attract and further develop.

Missing teeth and its effects on teeth harmony…

In the mouth there are thirty two teeth, all of which serve a purpose to chew, cut, mash and grind food into a paste for digestion. The teeth sit in a groove against each other and when we having missing teeth it can have a devastating effect on the way we utilise our mouths.

  • The mobility of your mouth can seriously deteriorate
  • Missing teeth is not an aesthetically pleasing sight and can damage self-confidence
  • It will more than likely stunt the development and influence the further destruction of more teeth to compensate.

To restore symmetry and harmony to your mouth, at Just Smile we encourage the placement of dental implants.

What is so natural about a dental implant?

A dental implant is only second to that of your natural tooth, it is the closest thing we offer to the real deal. The process in which a dental implant in used by the insertion of a titanium alloy screw that acts as the root and a prosthetic tooth is then placed over the top.

Dental implants are:

  • Biocompatible – your body will most likely not reject it
  • They take place of the missing tooth AND the root
  • Over time the titanium root will fuse to jaw bone
  • Permanent and durable solution
  • They look exactly like a real tooth

Replacing the missing tooth with a dental implant will restore the symmetry to your mouth by allowing it function properly again, allow you to regain normal speech and eating patterns, have a full, pleasing smile and no longer hinder development.

Regain your natural symmetry at Just Smile with our dental implant treatment…

At Just Smile we revel in such an amazing advancement in dental technology being available to us and if you are a suitable candidate we will not hesitate to offer you this treatment. Those who have healthy gums and enough bone volume to support the implant are more than likely candidates for the treatment. If you are unsure whether you are a viable candidate come and visit our practice at Ramsgate near the Sutherland Shire and well give you an evaluation. Regain your natural symmetry with a dental implant today!

Invest in Your Future Oral Health with Dental Implants

Dental Implants Are a Revolutionary Solution to Tooth Loss

Dental implants are the complete restorative and cosmetic package and can improve your oral health now and continue to do so well into the future. How?

Dental implants are a permanent prosthetic replacement for teeth, because they replicate the tooth root and provide a sturdy and strong base for a prosthetic tooth. At Just Smile in Sydney we believe that there is no better way to replace a missing tooth.

The implant itself is made from a titanium alloy that is highly biocompatible with your jawbone. What this means is that there is virtually no risk of your body rejecting the implant.

What Was Done Before Modern Dentistry…

Back in ancient Egypt it is said that bone and shell was used to replace missing teeth. This has been determined by interesting archaeological finds which discovered the presence of tortoise shell and bones in the jaw of numerous individuals.

Thankfully in the thousand or so years since then we’ve come a long, long way. Now dental implants are a safe and effective method for tooth replacement. Modern dental implants are not only an amazing restorative treatment they are also an effective cosmetic treatment that can restore your smile.

What Dental Implants Can Do For You…

Dental implants replace missing teeth – a procedure which is required for a number of health reasons:

  1. A missing tooth can cause the surrounding jaw bone to deteriorate
  2. Teeth surrounding the gap can migrate to fill the gap, which creates a distorted bite
  3. Gum tissue can shrink
  4. Deterioration of your jawbone can alter the appearance of your face

Dental implants can help retain healthy jaw bone density and look after surrounding teeth. A dental implant and the prosthetic tooth that will be attached will essentially help to restore the function and aesthetics back to your smile.

…Are you a Suitable Candidate?

A suitable dental implant patient is someone’s who gums are healthy and who have enough bone to support the implant. It is also necessary that a suitable candidate has a commitment to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. There are some patients who’ll need to be evaluated on an individual basis. These patients are those who:

  • Are heavy smokers
  • Are suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders
  • Have had radiation therapy to the head or neck

At Just Smile in Ramsgate one of our dentists will assess your health to determine whether or not you’re a suitable candidate for dental implants.

The Dental Implant Procedure…

The dental implant procedure involves surgically inserting the aluminium implant into the jawbone. Once this has healed small posts are attached and then the prosthetic tooth. The total treatment time for dental implants can take anywhere from 3-6 months. However, because each patient’s oral health is different times could vary.

The reason for this long treatment period is because we have to wait for your jawbone to heal around the implant. Once this is done, treatment can continue.  The last step in the treatment process is attaching your prosthetic tooth or dental implant crown. Once this is done you’ll have a perfectly functional prosthetic tooth that will blend in with the rest of your smile.

The Permanent Solution to Missing Teeth

Dental implants offer a permanent solution to missing teeth

At justSMILE, we offer dental implants as part of our cosmetic dentistry options. Despite its name, cosmetic dentistry is not only about improving the aesthetics of your smile. Cosmetic dentistry also includes procedures such as dental implants, crowns and bridges and fillings; these three treatments are just as important for the health and function of your smile as they are for aesthetics.

The complete range of cosmetic dentistry treatments available at Just Smile include:

  • Dental implants
  • Veneers: veneers are thin porcelain shells that are custom design to fit on the surface of your teeth. Veneers are a great cosmetic option to repair chipped or cracked teeth and protect the surface of a damaged tooth.
  • Crowns and bridges
  • Tooth whitening: at justSMILE, we use ZOOM! Tooth Whitening, one of the most popular and successful professional tooth whitening systems available.
  • Tooth coloured fillings: unlike tradition amalgam fillings, tooth coloured fillings are stronger and healthier for your teeth: unlike amalgam fillings, tooth coloured fillings complete seal the filling preventing bacteria from causing further decay underneath the restoration.
  • Inlays and Onlays: if a tooth coloured filling is not enough to solve the problem we have Inlays and Onlays to effectively restore broken or decayed teeth. In terms of strength Inlays and Onlays are somewhere between a tooth coloured filling and a dental crown—an Inlay or Onlay does not cover as much tooth as a crown (which covers the whole tooth) but provides more support than a dental filling.

Look after the function and appearance of your smile with dental implants…

Dental implants are one of the most popular dental treatments at the moment. The technology available makes performing the implant procedure much more accurate and therefore increasing the success rate of the treatment. On top of this, the titanium alloy that the screw is made of is biocompatible meaning the chance of infection or of your body rejecting the titanium screw is very small.

The dental implant procedure offered at justSMILE uses the NobelGuide System to aid our highly skilled dentists to safely and effectively insert the dental implant and the crown—making for faster recovery time.

Dental implants vs. dentures…

It should come as no surprise that with the advances in medical science many patients want to avoid removable dentures because of the embarrassment they cause whereas dental implants are surgically inserted into the jaw creating a strong artificial tooth root that—if look after properly—can last a lifetime. The added benefit of a dental implant is that the crown or bridge that is attached is made of sturdy, high-quality porcelain material that, if a healthy oral hygiene regime is maintained, can last for at least ten years.

Why dental implants are the best solution for missing teeth…

As has been said, dental implants are made of a titanium alloy that is biocompatible allowing for a more effective fusing of implant and bone. when the implant has fused with the bone and healed it provides a strong permanent tooth root that helps maintain a healthy bite and jaw—the crown that is attached to the implant that acts as an artificial tooth can last up to at least ten years.
