Cosmetic Dentistry FAQ

What do veneers feel like?

The process of veneers will involve filing down part of the tooth which can involve a tingling sensation. This is done so that the veneers don’t feel too big once fitted to your teeth. Once your veneers are bonded to your natural teeth they will feel just like your natural teeth, taking up no extra room unless they are being used to elongate short teeth. They may take a little while to get used to but after the first week most patients feel no difference.

When do veneers need to be replaced?

Veneers will need to be replaced when they become loose. When this happens will depend on how well you care for your smile. Most veneers and porcelain fixtures last for as long as 10 years and can last even longer. This is individual to every patient and in order to monitor your veneer treatment we recommend visiting our Ramsgate practice twice a year.

How does teeth whitening work?

In-chair teeth whitening uses LED light to activate a special gel which will be applied to your teeth. This process will occur approximately three times during one appointment to get the best results.

Our take-home whitening treatment will involve making a mould of your teeth which will be used to create clear teeth whitening trays. We will provide you with whitening gel which you will apply to your trays. You can then wear this tray for a number of hours so that the whitening gel can take effect. The active ingredient in whitening gel is peroxide which is the bleaching agent.

How can I make my smile look more feminine?

A classically beautiful smile is traditionally framed with full, feminine lips. Dermal fillers are a non-surgical treatment made from hyaluronic acids (which is a naturally occurring substance in the body), that can be used to change the size, shape and volume of your lips. Dermal fillers can create the perfect frame for your smile by adding volume to your lips, and reducing the appearance of lines around the mouth. You will be able to experience the gorgeous results of this treatment about a week after treatment. These results should last for six months or more, and compliment your beautiful smile perfectly.

Muscle relaxant injections can also be used to soften a muscular jaw line. If the muscles along your jawline are overworked, these can swell and create the appearance of a strong masculine jawline. Dr Rammo can inject these over worked muscles with muscle relaxant, to soften your jawline for a more feminine appearance.

How can I achieve a younger looking appearance?

Discoloured teeth can lead to an aged looking smile This is why at our Sydney dental practice we offer the Zoom! Tooth Whitening System, the most requested professional whitening system in the world. Four million smiles are a testament to the power of the Zoom! Tooth Whitening System, erasing the negative signs of coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco consumption, along with the effects of aging and some medications.

Results are natural looking, with teeth transforming up to eight shades lighter in one treatment The gums and soft tissue of the mouth are protected during the entire treatment.

All-On-4 Dental Implants FAQ

Will I be without teeth?

In most cases you will have set of temporary teeth on the day, sometimes in a week’s time.

Is the procedure painful?

Any surgical procedure will involve some level of discomfort which easily managed with strong pain killers.

How long does the treatment take?

3-4 months, you will have temporary teeth for about 3 months to have full healing and bone growing around the implants. Then the final set of teeth will be made for you.

Can I use my super to pay for All-on-4?

Yes, we use Supercare agency which help you with early release of your super.

Dentofacial Aesthetics FAQs

What is dentofacial aesthetics?

Dentofacial aesthetics is the combination of cosmetic elements to create a beautiful appearance. Fillers and muscle relaxants are commonly used to improve your face and the area that frames your smile. justSMILE practices dentofacial aesthetics as we believe cosmetic dentistry  should span beyond your teeth.

Find out more about our fillers and wrinkle relaxants here.

How can dentofacial aesthetics improve my smile?

Dentofacial aesthetics improve the entire harmony of your smile and the surrounding area Dentofacial aesthetics utilise dermal filler injections to perfect the area surrounding your smile. This option is popular for individuals who want to improve every aspect of their smile including their lips and even smile lines.

Dr Rammo can also utilise muscle relaxant anti-wrinkle treatments to decrease your risk of permanent wrinkles caused by muscle movement such as frown lines and eye creases.

How long do muscle relaxants last?

The length of time a muscle relaxant lasts will depend on the type of muscle relaxant and the patient. Some muscle relaxants last three months while some last up to six months or more. Dr Rammo will discuss what relaxant is the most appropriate for your condition and provide the estimated length of time that it will last for.

How long do dermal fillers last?
Dermal fillers last on average six to twelve months. This depends on the patient and the type of dermal filler used. Some areas of the body respond more positively to this treatment as well. Popular areas include the lips and scowl lines in the forehead between the brows.
What are dermal fillers made out of?
Most dermal fillers are made out of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring compound in the body. There are also permanent fillers in existence which are made out of different synthetic materials. Here at justSMILE we utilise long lasting dermal fillers made out of hyaluronic acid.
General Dentistry FAQs

What do I do if I have a dental emergency in Ramsgate?
If you have a dental emergency such as extreme pain or tooth loss then it’s important to remain calm. If you have knocked a tooth out please place it in the hollow of your cheek or in a glass of milk. Call our practice straight away to organise an emergency appointment. We leave time aside for these each day so we should be able to fit your emergency in.
What is ‘same day loading’ with dental implants?
Same day loading means that you will receive your permanent crown on the same day as your implant. This reduces the number of appointments you require.
Should I use a mouthwash?
Mouthwash can be beneficial for your overall oral hygiene. If you have undergone any dental surgery then you should use an anti-bacterial mouthwash unless otherwise recommended by your dentist. Whitening mouthwashes can be good for gradual whitening although you won’t have the same results as professional whitening.
How do I know if I have a cavity?

The symptoms of a cavity include:

  • Pain that can seem to spread into your jaw from your tooth
  • Sensitivity to cold and hot foods or drinks
  • Black spots in the crevice of your tooth

Your dentist is the best person to identify and treat a cavity. Once you have a cavity you also will not be able to reverse the effects – a fissure sealant or filling will most likely be required.

When will I need a dental crown as opposed to veneers?

A dental crown is a restorative treatment while veneers are cosmetic. You will require a dental crown when your tooth has been damaged significantly or possibly after receiving root canal therapy. A crown is used to restrengthen the tooth so if your dentist deems that your tooth is too weak for a filling or for other means of repair then they will recommend a dental crown.

Veneers will only be recommended for damaged teeth if the problems are cosmetic. For example if you have small chips at the very surface of your teeth then veneers may be right for you. Veneers can also conceal discolouration and other cosmetic imperfections.

How can I fix chipped and cracked teeth?

Porcelain veneers can be used to repair chipped and cracked teeth. Dental veneers are thin porcelain shells that are custom-designed to be fitted to the front surface of your teeth, re-enforcing the tooth structure and enhancing their aesthetic appeal.

Restore strength, youthfulness and elegance to your smile.

Dental veneers present a range of aesthetic and functional benefits:

  • Porcelain mimics the translucent quality of natural tooth enamel, creating a seamlessly beautiful finish.
  • Veneers can be used to create a straight looking smile, and correct teeth that are too short or too long.
  • Porcelain veneers can protect the surface of a damaged tooth.

Dental veneer treatment sometimes requires minimal tooth reshaping during the preparation process. With proper care, this cosmetic treatment can last up to 15 years.

How often do I need to see the dentist?

You need to visit the dentist twice a year or every six months. This is the best way to keep on top of your oral health and identify and treat any problems as they occur rather than after they have fully developed into full-scale issues. If you do not visit the dentist every six months you put yourself in danger of painful cavities, periodontitis and oral cancer.

Preventive Dentistry FAQs

How do I prevent dental decay?

You need to brush your teeth twice a day – after breakfast and after dinner. This is the most integral part of the dental hygiene process. You also need to floss daily to prevent periodontal pockets from forming between your teeth. Smoking and your diet can also affect your risk of decay and disease which is why we recommend avoiding sugary foods, acidic foods and we recommend eating calcium-rich foods such as cheese and yoghurt which coat your teeth in a protective film.

What foods can I eat or avoid to improve the health of my smile?

Acidic foods damage your enamel. Lemon, balsamic vinegar and soft drinks are all highly acidic and damage your enamel. Once you lose this enamel it is impossible to grow it back naturally. Avoid these foods except on rare occasions to protect your smile.

Sugary foods stimulate negative bacteria and cause decay. Sugar is terrible for your teeth. We recommend swapping to an artificial sweetener which is better for your teeth and health.

Yoghurt and Cheese can protect your teeth. These foods coat your teeth in a protective film which prevents decay and acid affecting your enamel. However, these foods can also contribute to respiratory problems so we recommend eating them in moderation.

I have pain in my tooth, do I need a root canal?

Pain in your tooth does not automatically mean that you need a root canal. Dr Rammo will assess your condition and recommend the best solution. Most commonly you will require a fissure sealant or filling and a root canal will only be recommended if completely necessary.

If you do experience pain it’s imperative that you book an urgent appointment.

How can I keep all my teeth as I get older?

While there’s no fail-safe procedure that will ensure you keep all your teeth as you age you can improve your changes by regularly brushing your teeth, flossing and visiting the dentist. Dental hygiene is the only way to ensure that you maintain your teeth for as long as possible.

Children’s Dentistry FAQs

What is the Child Dental Benefit Schedule?

The Child Dental Benefit Schedule or CDBS is a government benefit run through Medicare. This benefit means that some children aged 2-17 will qualify for dental treatments paid for by the government. This benefit is $1,000 over a 2 year period and includes general treatments like fillings, x-rays, check-ups and cleans. The costs for these will be bulk billed by our practice through Medicare under the CDBS.

Laser Dentistry FAQs

Do lasers hurt?

Most of our patients remain completely comfortable during their laser dentistry appointments. We also provide our patients with products to decrease the smell which is a result of the laser dentistry procedure.  Your comfort is our priority which is why we offer anaesthetic to our patients undergoing laser or dental surgery.

How can I fix my gummy smile?

When too much gum is revealed, it creates an imbalance in the proportions of a beautiful smile.

At JustSmile located in South Sydney, our principal dentist Dr Rammo can utilise dentofacial aesthetics and laser dentistry to correct a gummy smile.

Gummy smiles are caused by two factors:

  • Excess gum tissue
  • Overactive muscles controlling the upper lip

Excess gum tissue can be treated with laser dentistry Laser gum contouring is a virtually pain-free treatment that uses a soft tissue diode laser to remove excess gum tissue. In this procedure the laser reseals the soft tissue of the mouth, creating a bloodless procedure that heals within a few days.

Overactive upper lip muscles can be treated with injectable muscle relaxants

During this treatment, a muscle relaxant is injected into the overactive muscles, reducing the elevation of the upper lip and creating a beautiful, more symmetrical smile. This is a virtually painless procedure that can be undertaken in around 10 minutes, and patients can return to normal activity immediately.

Results are typically seen after a week or two.

How do lasers help with gum disease?

Lasers can be used to eradicate bad bacteria which causes gum disease and gum inflammation. If negative bacteria is left untreated periodontal pockets can form which can result in severe decay, tooth rotting and gum disease which is irreversible. Lasers are also used in the management of periodontitis in order to decrease symptoms and decrease the risk of tooth loss.

How do they use lasers for root canal treatment?

Some lasers can be used to create an incision in tissue. We use lasers for some surgical procedures as they enable a bloodless incision that is more comfortable for the patient during and after surgery. We will always provide anaesthetic for our more invasive procedures, ask us about this today.
