Dental Crown Materials

When you’re thinking about dental crowns, it’s super important to know the different types of materials out there. Each type has its pros and cons, so let’s dive into what you need to know!

Types of Materials Used in Dental Crowns

Dental crowns come in a few main materials. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Porcelain: These crowns look a lot like real teeth! They’re great for front teeth because they blend in well.
  • Zirconia: Strong and tough, zirconia crowns can be used on both the front and back teeth. They resist damage and look nice too.
  • Metal: Made from gold or other metals, these crowns last a long time. They are very strong but might not look as good, so they’re often used for back teeth.
  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal: This type combines the strength of metal with the looks of porcelain. It gives good durability and appearance.

Choosing the Right Dental Crown Material for Your Needs

Choosing a dental crown material is all about your needs. Here are some things to think about:

  • Tooth Location: If it’s a front tooth, you might want something that looks natural, like porcelain. If it’s a back tooth, durability might be more important.
  • Cost: Some materials, like gold and porcelain, can cost more than resin-based options.
  • Your Preferences: Talk with your dental practice about what you want. They can help find a good fit for your situation.

Comparing the Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Crown Materials

Material Advantages Disadvantages
Porcelain Looks great, very natural Not as durable as metal
Zirconia Super strong, looks nice A bit pricier
Metal Lasts a long time, very strong Less attractive
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Good combination of strength and beauty May show metal at the gums

Smile Aesthetics

A great smile can boost your confidence! Dental crowns can do a lot for your smile’s appearance.

How Dental Crowns Can Improve the Appearance of Your Smile

Dental crowns can help your smile by:

  • Fixing the shape of damaged teeth
  • Hiding stains or flaws
  • Closing gaps between teeth
  • Making your overall smile more even

Considerations for Achieving a Natural-Looking Dental Crown

To make sure your dental crown looks as real as possible, keep these tips in mind:

  • Choose the Right Material: Pick high-quality options like porcelain or zirconia for a lifelike look.
  • Match the Color: Your dentist will help pick a color that matches your natural teeth.
  • Expert Installation: Get your crowns placed by a skilled dental professional for the best results.

Enhancing Your Smile with Dental Crowns

Thinking about enhancing your smile? One hour dental crowns are a quick option. You can get noticeable improvements in no time, without having to wait weeks for traditional crowns.

Cost and Insurance

Understanding the costs and insurance coverage for dental crowns can help ease your mind.

Estimating the Cost of a Dental Crown

The price of a dental crown can depend on several factors:

  • Material: Porcelain and zirconia crowns usually cost more than metal options.
  • Location: Prices might change depending on where you live and the dental clinic you visit.
  • Insurance: Check what your plan covers for crowns.
  • Consultation: Talk to your dentist for a detailed cost estimate based on your specific needs.

Understanding Dental Insurance Coverage for Crowns

Most insurance plans help cover some of the costs for dental crowns. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Coverage Amount: Your plan may cover between 50-80% of crown costs.
  • Pre-Approval: Sometimes, you need pre-approval from your insurance before getting a crown.
  • Plan Details: Make sure the crown meets your insurance provider’s requirements for coverage.

Tips for Making Dental Crowns More Affordable

You can manage your costs better with these tips:

  • Payment Plans: Ask your dental office if they offer payment options or financing.
  • Dental Savings Plans: Look into plans that can help lower your costs.
  • Shop Around: Check prices at different dental clinics to find the best deal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Same Day Dental Crowns & Bridges

What are dental crowns?

What are dental crowns? A dental crown or a tooth crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over your natural tooth.

You may require a dental crown for a number of reasons including:

  • After root canal treatment
  • For a broken or chipped tooth
  • To replace an old filling
  • Or simply to improve the look of your smile

A dental crown, or tooth cap as they are sometimes referred to, will help protect your tooth from any further damage or infection. If you have chipped or broken your tooth you can read more about what to do here.

What are dental bridges?

If you have missing teeth, a dental bridge can be used to “bridge” the gap. Here, a ‘fake’ tooth fills the gap of the missing tooth and is held in place by dental crowns. An alternative to dental bridges is to replace the missing teeth is dental implants. You can read more about dental implants here.

What are the risks and considerations with Dental Crowns?

Crown placement generally involves reducing the entire surface of a tooth, which is permanent. This may cause the following:

  • Temporary or longer-term sensitivity.
  • While crowns are strong, they can still chip, fracture, or come loose, especially in patients who grind their teeth.
  • Colour is matched carefully, but final results may not meet expectations exactly.
  • Gum irritation may develop if cleaning is inadequate or if a crown does not fit properly.
  • Crowns are not lifelong solutions and may need replacement due to wear, breakage, or changes in adjacent teeth and gums.

The procedure usually takes two visits. Most patients resume daily activities quickly, though some may require short rest periods. Teeth that need crowns are often already weakened, and there is a possibility that root canal treatment may be required later. Research indicates that a proportion of crowned teeth may eventually need further treatment. Ongoing check-ups and care are important, and additional costs may occur.

How much do dental crowns cost?

The cost for your dental crown will typically be around $1,850 per crown. The exact amount will be determined and explained to you ahead of any treatment. Contact our staff for more information. Your health fund should cover some of these costs and we also offer flexible payment plans so that you can pay your crown off over a number of weeks or months.
