Adult Braces, the Why, the How and the What

Considering Adult Braces?

Did you know that a whopping 55% of Australian adults are self-conscious about our teeth?

And that given a chance to change something about their appearance:

  • 5% would change their ears
  • 12% would change their eyes
  • 16% would change their eyebrows
  • 22% would change their nose
  • And 46% would change their teeth!*

So, this being the case, the question is why aren’t more people treating themselves to a straighter, healthier grin?

Well, let’s face it, wearing dental braces as an adult isn’t as cool as it was when you were a kid.  We can think of a few ‘adult’ responsibilities where having a face full of metal braces may not be the (train) track we want to go down:).

  • Work – speaking to clients or giving a presentation
  • Socializing – try to go out to dinner without worrying about food getting caught in your braces
  • Romantic moments – smooching your loved one might not be as nice as it once was

So, to help you we have put together some reasons why you might need teeth straightening as an adult and why straight teeth are healthy teeth.

We will also discuss the 4 most popular treatments and best options for adult braces to straighten those pearly whites of yours, the pros, cons of each and as well as how much adult braces cost.

Reasons you might need dental braces as an adult

Our parents are mainly to blame when it comes to crooked teeth.  However, you may notice that as you age your teeth may start to change position.  There are a number of reasons that our teeth move as we get older.

Your teeth are actually very prone to movement and are mainly kept in place by your cheeks, lips and tongue and of course, your other teeth.  Therefore if we experience any of the below, this could lead to your teeth moving as you age.

  • Tooth loss
  • Grinding teeth
  • Tooth wear
  • Oral habits – such as thumb sucking as a kid or biting your lip
  • Gum disease

But I already had braces as a kid!

I hear you cry!  Relapse is one of the most common reasons for adult orthodontics.  These days after orthodontic treatment in kids most dentists will provide a fixed retainer on the back of their teeth to prevent relapse, but back in the day, this was not as common.  A removable retainer was provided and, most likely, not worn as often as it should have been.

The good news is that if you have already had orthodontic treatment then moving your teeth back into place as an adult is usually quite easy and quick.

The video below shows the treatment plan of one of our actual patients who had braces as a kid and her teeth relapsed.  She was able to straighten her teeth with clear, removable aligners and treatment will be finished in just 3 months!

Who is adult orthodontic treatment suitable for?

Adult orthodontics can fix a number of issues including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Underbite or overbite
  • Deep bite
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Gaps in your teeth

If you are considering cosmetic dentistry such as porcelain veneers to get that perfect celebrity smile, adult orthodontic treatment is often used prior to the procedure as a more conservative approach.

Straight teeth are healthy teeth

Many people are unaware that crooked teeth or a misaligned bite could be harmful to your health – and not just your oral health!  There are many health benefits that adult orthodontics can provide such as:

  • Psychological benefits – by boosting your self-confidence
  • Oral health benefits – It’s easier to keep your teeth and gums clean when your teeth are straight reducing the risk of decay and gum disease
  • Get a better sleep – A misaligned bite is often the cause of snoring
  • Reduce headaches – Grinding your teeth and a misaligned bite can cause headaches and jaw problems

So now we know what problems we can fix with adult braces and why we should – let’s go to the how.  Below we have listed the 4 most popular teeth straightening options for adults.

Different types of braces for adults

Clear aligners or clear braces

Unless you have been living under a rock, you would have probably heard about Invisalign.  But what you may not know is that this is not the only invisible braces option, just the most well-known brand name.

Clear braces, also sometimes referred to as clear aligners or clear trays are becoming more and more popular, and there are many options available today.  The other well-known brand in Australia is ClearCorrect.

The process for clear braces

Your dentist will take an impression of your teeth, and this information is put into special software that can digitally move your teeth into position.  You then approve the treatment along with your dentist, and this information is then sent to the company who will manufacture your aligners.

You then receive a number of sets of aligners that you wear day and night and change about every two weeks.  The length of time it takes and the number of sets of aligners will vary depending on how much your teeth need to move.

Pros of clear braces

Clear aligners are practically invisible and removable to fit into your lifestyle.  You can take them out whenever you like, for that special selfie or when you are out for dinner with friends.

Below is a picture of our lovely patient out for dinner with her friends with her clear aligners in place – see if you can spot them!

adult braces

They are made out of a clear plastic mould that fits exactly over your teeth so they are also very comfortable and easy to get used to.

Because of the advanced technology, you also get to see what your teeth will look like before you even start your treatment.

Cons of clear braces

Just because you can take them out, you still have to wear your clear aligners for about 22 hours a day, so you need to be diligent about this.  For kids (or even some adults:) because they are removable there is the possibility of misplacing them. This is not such a big deal as they can be reordered, but this may result in your treatment time being extended and possibly an extra cost.

Cost of clear braces

From $4,000 to $8,000

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry where a thin layer of porcelain is placed over your natural tooth.  These are a good option for those who want to improve the look of their teeth, the shape, size or colour and who only have slightly crooked teeth.

Adult orthodontics is very commonly used in conjunction with porcelain veneers to give you that fantastic Hollywood smile.

The process for porcelain veneers

When preparing for porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel needs to be removed from the surface of your teeth.  A thin ‘veneer’ of porcelain is then placed over your natural tooth. Porcelain veneers can be done ‘chairside’ with a special CAD CAM machine that the dentist can perform in one appointment, or alternatively, made by a dental technician.

If the veneers are made in the dental laboratory by a dental technician, this will usually take around two weeks in which time the dentist will provide you with temporary veneers.

Pros of porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers can correct quite a few issues, not just misaligned teeth.  They allow you to change the shape, colour and size of your teeth. If the dentist is using CAD-CAM technology, then you will also be able to see what your teeth will look like before the veneers are made.

Cons of porcelain veneers

If you need a lot of correction or are trying to correct a misaligned bite, then porcelain veneers are not recommended.  However, as mentioned they can be used in conjunction with adult orthodontics.

Cost of porcelain veneers

From $1,200 to $2,500 for one porcelain veneer

adult braces

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are merely metal braces that are placed on the back your teeth instead of the front.

The Process for lingual braces

Brackets are placed on the back of your teeth and tightened with a wire.  A visit to the orthodontist is normally required every couple of weeks to get the wire tightened.

Pros of lingual braces

Lingual braces are the only “true” invisible type of braces as they are on the back of your teeth so no-one will be able to see them.  In some extreme cases, clear braces or aligners can’t be used as too much movement is required.  In this case, lingual braces are a good option.

Cons of lingual braces

Because lingual braces are brackets and wire they may cut your tongue a bit, they also take a fair bit of getting used to.  They take longer to fit and are also generally more expensive.

Cost of lingual braces

From $8,000 to $10,000

adult braces

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are a ‘clear’ version of metal braces.  The brackets are made out of ceramic and are therefore white or clear, so they blend in with the teeth.

Pros of ceramic braces

Because they work just like regular braces they can also be used when more aggressive movement is needed.  They do not stand out as much as metal braces.

Cons of ceramic braces

You will still have brackets on the front of your teeth.  They can be hard for your lips and tongue to get used to, may cut up your lips and cheeks a little bit and are still slightly visible.  They are usually slightly more expensive than metal braces.

Cost of ceramic braces

From $4,000 to $8,000

So, now hopefully you are armed with all the information you need and with all of these amazing options why wouldn’t you treat yourself to a happier, healthier you!

3 Reasons: Add Philips Zoom Whitening to General Check-Ups

Zoom whitening is a popular whitening treatment that can be performed after your general check-up

Booking a general check-up or hygiene appointment before teeth whitening can actually improve your results. This is because the surface of the teeth will not have any barriers to stop the whitening gel.

This also ensures that your teeth are healthy before whitening treatment continues. This is important as teeth whitening can lead to some sensitivity of the gums, which can be worsened by the presence of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) or sensitivity due to tooth decay.

1. Zoom Whitening is one of the most popular whitening treatments available and has been performed on over 10 million people.

Zoom Whitening is the number one most requested professional whitening system by patients who want white teeth. It is a laser teeth whitening system which usually involves 4 ‘treatments’ in the one appointment. Your appointment will involve four applications of the whitening gel over a 60-90 minute appointment. The gel will be removed after each application and then reapplied so the whitening procedure can continue. The active whitening ingredient in the gel is also activated by an LED light.

2. There are some great reviews of Zoom online!

One of the most common questions people ask is “There are thousands of reviews online, why aren’t there any on your website?”

If you’re considering Philips Zoom Whitening then you may want to find out what other people have been saying about the procedure. For legal reasons we can’t feature reviews or testimonials on our website as it is a policy put in place by the Australian Dental Association. You can, however, look at some helpful review sites on the internet which go into real-life results of Philips Zoom Whitening in America and overseas. We have curated these reviews below so you can take a look at them all in the same place.

Once again it’s important to know that none of these reviews are in response to our individual practice, they are simply reviews for Philips Zoom Whitening which we also offer at our Ramsgate Beach dental practice. We in no way have endorsed the reviews on these sites.

3. Zoom Whitening Technology is advanced and supported by professionals

intensity

The LED light used by all Philips Zoom machines has three customisable settings to suit the results you want to achieve and your sensitivity to treatment. The intensity of our whitening lamp is also 100% greater than the closest competitor lamp. This is how so many patients achieve impressive results.

Are there possible side effects to teeth whitening?

There is a risk of some side effects with teeth whitening. But the risks are much less when getting your teeth whitened professionally at the dentist, rather than at home or by an inexperienced person.  The most common side effect people report is gum sensitivity. This can sometimes happen after the procedure when a small amount of the gums come in contact with the bleaching agent. This sensitivity should only last for 48 hours and most patients either take paracetamol or nothing at all.

Teeth Whitening At Home Or At the Dentist?

Does teeth whitening really work?

Teeth whitening kits are accessible from your local chemist, supermarket and on many online sites. You can even get quick treatments at pop up stores in shopping centres between picking up your dry cleaning and your weekly grocery shop.

With so many options, as a savvy customer, you’re probably thinking – Will any of these work for me? How are they different? Why are they priced that way?

If you’re looking to improve your smile with teeth whitening, there are things you need to know before deciding on how and where you’ll have your teeth whitened.

Who is tooth bleaching for?

Coffee lovers beware! Coffee stains teeth. Consuming dark beverages like coffee, tea and that blissful glass of red wine on a Friday night can lead to stained teeth. Your favourite pasta sauce, curry and even berries are also culprits that contribute to the discolouration of the micropores on your teeth. Teeth bleaching can help remove the stains caused by everyday life.

Who is tooth bleaching not for?

Whitening products don’t work on all teeth for everyone, particularly if you have veneers or crowns made of porcelain or composite (tooth coloured material). In this case, replacing them is the only way to change their colour if they’re stained.

Stains that are ‘inside out’ stains originate from the root of the tooth. These also have limited effect with tooth bleaching.

Tetracycline stains caused by antibiotics taken in childhood are also difficult to treat with tooth bleaching. Porcelain Veneers are typically the most predictable way to cover up Tetracycline stains.

Bleach strength is important for dramatic, noticeable results

The active ingredients used on your teeth when whitening your teeth are important, more so than if you use a special “light” or not. To achieve dramatic results in a short amount of time, stronger concentrations are used to whiten teeth. Professional grade products combined with the light provide dramatic results.

As of 2013 in Australia, only dentists are allowed to use strong solutions greater than 6% Hydrogen Peroxide (or 18% carbamide peroxide). The Poisons Standard changed as a result of the increasing injuries from non-dentist using tooth whitening with stronger products.

Whitening your teeth at a pop-up kiosk or home teeth whitening kits may improve your smile, but it won’t be as dramatic as the results when whitened by your dentist.

Your dentist is able to combine stronger ingredients with a light system like the Zoom! Whitening that salons and kiosks don’t have access to.

Are your teeth healthy for whitening?

If you have tooth decay, bleeding gums or strong plaque build-up, you’ll need to have this treated by a dentist before you whiten your teeth. It’s worthwhile getting a dental check-up before conducting any teeth whitening to identify issues that need attention.

Someone who is not a dental professional may not address or see health issues with your teeth that may cause you unnecessary harm or pain.

Your dentist will also have more experience to know if your stains will respond to bleaching. Not all stains can be removed with teeth whitening and it’s costly to find this out after you’ve already paid for it.

When considering teeth whitening to improve your smile and give you that extra boost of confidence, it may be tempting to use cheaper, convenient options. However, only a dentist can identify any dental issues that may cause complications, work with products strong enough to obtain dramatic results and provide you with a custom tray that is comfortable and which protects your gums. Cheaper at home and kiosk type services won’t get you the same effective results or provide the same level of diligence your dentist will.

A tooth whitening experience at the dental office takes less than a couple of hours out of your day and you’ll get dramatic safe teeth whitening before and after results immediately which is great if you are in a hurry to enhance your pearly whites.

Cosmetic Dentistry: Looking After More than just Your Teeth

At justSMILE in Sydney we offer a cosmetic treatment plan for your teeth and your face

Improving the appearance of your smile has never been easier with dentofacial aesthetics.

Dentofacial aesthetics combines dentistry with treatments such as: lip fillers, anti-wrinkle treatments and gummy smile treatment. What this means for you is you can have your teeth whitened and your frown lines treated to give you an all-round smile rejuvenation treatment.

Your teeth, your smile and receiving the best treatment for you and your smile

When you visit justSMILE we will assess your oral health and determine the best course of action for you. Many patients come in hoping tooth whitening will be all they need to improve the appearance of their smile. More often than not they are surprised when we tell them about dentofacial aesthetics, and how it is an all-encompassing method of improving your smile.

For example: the colour of your teeth may not be the only reason you’re not smiling. Maybe someone pointed out your frown lines, or your crows’ feet. Maybe you feel you have more gum than teeth. Either way at justSMILE we can help you.

And then there’s which dental treatment is best for you.

While most of the time the answer to discoloured teeth is tooth whitening ,there are cases when tooth whitening will not be an effective treatment method for you. The reason for this is that your teeth may be discoloured from the inside.

If this is the case then no amount of tooth whitening will work, you would then need a different treatment such as maybe root canal therapy or porcelain veneers.

Why porcelain veneers and not tooth whitening?

The difference between a tooth whitening treatment such as ZOOM! Tooth whitening and porcelain veneers is what they can do for your teeth. Tooth whitening can only brighten your smile, while porcelain veneers are able to conceal minor chips, cracks and imperfections. They are strong, sturdy and stain-resistant providing you with a whiter, healthy-looking smile.

A healthy-looking smile is the aim of cosmetic dentistry; there is no point giving a patient a smile that does not suit them, this means taking the time to assess their health and determine what is the best treatment for them.

Cosmetic dentistry and dentofacial aesthetics

If you are looking for a treatment plan which not only helps improve the appearance of your teeth but could also improve the appearance of thin lips, frown lines and gummy smile.

Cosmetic dentistry offers solutions to improve your teeth—dentofacial aesthetics offers a solution to improve your teeth and your smile through a blend of anti-wrinkle injections and dentistry.

If you would like to know more about what dentofacial aesthetics can do for you, or to book an appointment at justSMILE, please contact us today.

Are You Looking for Teeth Whitening in Sydney?

Dentist Dr Rammo explains the Philips Zoom! Teeth Whitening process from his Sydney dental practice:

What sets Zoom! Teeth Whitening treatments apart from regular whitening treatments here in Sydney?

The difference between using Zoom teeth whitening (in-office) compared to an alternative whitening product is that once you start mixing the alternative whitening products, the active ingredients will generally become active for about 2-3 minutes. From then on, the alternative whitening treatment is basically just a regular gel.

With the Zoom treatment, Philips have invented a way to ensure the gel is activated by the light. This is called a sustained release of the bleaching solution.

This means that rather than having a great release of the bleaching solution in the 2-3 minutes it is active, we are able to control the release on a steady basis for 15 minutes. By following this method we are able to continue the whitening procedure at the same pace until the 15 minutes are up.

How is the treatment performed?

Step 1: Protection

Firstly we will isolate the treatment area. We spend about 15 minutes to ensure the gum, cheeks, and lips are covered and all tissues aside from the teeth themselves are protected. Here at Just Smile, due to the strong nature of the bleaching agents at work, we take extra care in ensuring the patient will feel no discomfort throughout the treatment process.

Step 2: Light activation

Once we are satisfied with the protective measures, we will apply the first layer of the Zoom whitening gel. Using the light we will activate the gel for 15 minutes. Once that cycle is completed the machine will automatically shut down to protect the patient’s smile.

Step 3: Repeat the process

Once this process is complete, we will then wipe away the old gel and reapply. This process is carried out 3 times. By the end of the 45 minute session, your teeth should look at least 6 shade lighter depending on your initial discolouration.

Treating Wrinkles and Other Cosmetic Procedures at the Dentist?

People generally associate the dentist with simply fixing teeth

but as modern science advances and as the study of dentistry continues to evolve, the borders and limitations of what a dentist can treat have become blurred.

Here at justSMILE in Ramsgate Beach, we believe that restoring balance to your smile is about more than just correcting your oral concerns. Dr Rammo explains: “People just want to smile and they want to have a reason to do that. Many patients hide their smile because they have a problem… Patients will come to the practice, sit on the chair and say ‘I never smile’ and it starts from there. It’s obvious that there is an underlying reason… By dealing with just the smile and tackling the fundamental cause, we are able to create a happier practice.”

By providing dentofacial aesthetics we are able to go beyond dentistry

Dentofacial aesthetics adds a twist to cosmetic dentistry by focusing on enhancing the natural beauty of the face as well as the teeth. Dr Rammo delivers 3 different dentofacial aesthetics treatment options:

Dentists receive greater training on facial anatomy during their studies, so it is a natural step that highly trained professionals such as Dr Rammo provide cosmetic treatments for the facial area. Looking to soften wrinkles, plump your lips, or resolve a gummy smile? justSMILE in Ramsgate Beach can help with dentofacial aesthetic treatments.
